Indian society

THE ECONOMIC SITUATION

India covers 3,300,000 km² and has the largest population in the world after China. According to the latest geographical forecasts, there will be 1.4 billion people by 2022 in India.

Apart from being very dense in demographic terms, India is also a country with an extremely rich cultural diversity where more than 1600 languages are spoken. These languages divide into several families, the largest of which are Dravidian in the south of the country and Indo-European in the north.

THE CAST SYSTEM
Hindiusm, the religion of 80% of the Indian population has a direct impact on the social structure and in particular on the division of society into castes.

Belonging to a particular caste depends primarily on birth. Indeed, according to this creterion, the individual is positioned into a caste and a sub-caste. Over time, a kind of social 'hierarchy' has been established, characterised by specific privileges and duties. Power is of course in the hands of the 'highest' castes in the hierarchy.

WHAT WE DO

Tutoring for Dalit children from marginalized communities in the Udupi district.

Deodas Shetty has set up an educational support system based on Gandhi's philosophy. The main goal of this system has been to show parents, most of whom haven’t had the chance to receive an education, that education can be beneficial for their children and that, despite the injustices endured, the learning process can help them become full and active members of Indian society.

OUR PROJECTS

1 - Reaching 10 academic and educational support centres

Like with the existing centres, to involve the parents in participating in the centre’s functioning is an essential condition to open two more centres. The measures to take are :

- to create a committee of parents;

- to find a place while ensuring the electricity supply;

- to find a teacher for a centre;

- to procure a minimum of school equipment and books.

Be sure to attend the theatre performance of the Compagnie des 7 de la Cité that takes place every year in March!

In 2018, the troupe performed Le Repas des Fauves by Vahé Katcha. All benefits collected during the evening reception go to our organisation.

The general meeting of our organisation usually takes place on the same day as the performance.

Lastly, do not forget to come and say hi to us at the yearly handmade wares sales in November. Learn more on our next events here.
